Grandma Inspired Comfort Food

I hope you are enjoying the last days of August. Time just flew by for our family this summer, and it’s already time to go back to school!

I was fortunate to spend part of our summer holidays in Belgrade, Serbia, where I was born and lived until the age of 13. Growing up, my grandmothers were always cooking and baking, and I was fortunate enough to taste their delicious creations. It was one of the ways in which they expressed their love and care for me and my cousins. I loved baking with my mom and grandmothers, and was fascinated that they had all of the recipes committed to memory and always knew how much of each ingredient to put in. I sometimes reflect on my childhood and remember family gatherings and enjoying traditional Serbian meals and dessert with my large extended family…the joy of being with our loved ones, feeling safe, laughing, loving and being in the moment, is an important feeling to carry. It is important to me that I pass this onto my children…along with some delicious dishes 🙂

So, when my kiddies asked me to make “Strudla s’makom” (poppy seed strudel) and homemade bread, I enthusiastically started ordering ingredients.

I’m excited to share these traditional recipes, inspired by my grandmothers’ baking, several online recipes, and 2 table spoons of my own little tweaks, of course.

Friendly warning: The strudel recipe contains a high amount of sugar. This is intended to be a “once in a while” treat, enjoyed in small quantities. If you have diabetes, please do not eat this, or try a sugar substitute (such as erythritol or stevia – although if you choose one of these, use them in moderation, and still enjoy the strudel in small quantities).
