We hope you are enjoying this fall season! As Halloween is next week, and before we know it, Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays will follow, let’s talk sugar and sugar substitutes.
The average American consumes over 7 tablespoons of added sugars per day. Seven table spoons! Let that sink in…Excess sugar intake is linked to higher calorie intake and lower quality diet, which leads to an increased risk of an array of medical conditions, including type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, fatty liver, cancer, inflammation, acne and depression.
As many of us may be looking for ways to cut sugar from our diet, it’s no surprise that we are turning to various sugar substitutes. The options are endless, but not all sugar substitutes are created equal (no pun intended).
It can be confusing to know which sweetener is best for you, and which ones you should avoid, so we have broken down the good, the bad, and the ugly of the most common sweeteners. Our practice’s registered dietitian, Erica Gittleson and Dr. Bojana Jankovic Weatherly, will guide you and help answer the following questions:
Which sweetener has been linked with leukemia?
Which sweeteners may cause stomach upset and should be avoided by individuals with IBS and SIBO?
Which sweeteners are safe to consume in moderation?
To find answers to these questions and learn more about which sweeteners to avoid, and which are safe to consume, continue to read here.
