Perimenopause and menopause are often considered the dreaded time periods in a woman’s life. If you search up images for either word (as I did while preparing one of my PowerPoint presentations last month), you’ll realize that women in this stage are often depicted as depressed, tired or irritable. These stages of life are marked not only by significant hormonal and metabolic transitions, but also by natural changes of life circumstances and often by professional transitions. Many of the changes can be painful, physically and emotionally. They can be exhausting and confusing, and lead to major physical and mental co-morbidities. Sadly, the medical system has lagged behind the evidence and care in supporting women’s needs.
Fortunately, times have changed. In the last few years, more and more attention has been placed on evidence-informed modalities to support women in perimenopause and menopause. Women are becoming more empowered with information and knowledge on how to support themselves through lifestyle, nutrition, hormone replacement therapy, other medications and supplemental support. My vision is that we come to a time when all women can celebrate entering this stage of life of new wisdom, new creativity and capabilities, and navigate the symptoms effectively.
In my two interviews with Dr. Mayoni Gooneratne, UK based physician and former surgeon, specializing in women’s health, we discuss changes that occur in perimenopause and menopause. We talk about how to navigate these medically, through lifestyle, nutrition and our own self-understanding.
I hope you find these informative and helpful – whether in your own journey, if this applies to you, or can share with a loved one.
