You have likely heard of elimination diets used by many individuals with chronic conditions including digestive symptoms, autoimmunity, skin rashes, migraines, and others. What exactly is an elimination diet and does it work?
Elimination diets can be empiric (meaning we avoid the most common food allergens empirically for a given period of time) or targeted (based on food sensitivity testing).
This nutritional plan has been found to benefit individuals with a wide range of conditions that are believed to be triggered or exacerbated by increased intestinal permeability (leaky gut) and the immune system response at the level of the gut. In our practice, we often guide our patients to implement elimination diets in order to alleviate their symptoms and as part of a strategy to address the root causes of their symptoms.
