How a Molecule from Gut Bacteria Contributes to Weight Gain, Diabetes, and Cardiovascular Risk

by | December 15, 2022

There has been a great deal of research and clinical interest in the gut microbiome and its relationship to our metabolism, including how it impacts our blood glucose, insulin resistance, cholesterol levels, cardiovascular risk, and many more conditions.

In our most recent article, we discuss a molecule that plays an important role in development of a multitude of chronic diseases, is linked to inflammation and an unfavorable metabolic profile.

This molecule, called lipopolysaccharide (LPS), is present in the outer membrane of a type of bacteria in our gastrointestinal tract (Gram-negative bacteria). It has been associated with chronic inflammation, obesity, diabetes, depression, thyroid disease, low testosterone, and more. One of its strongest associations is with metabolic syndrome – a cluster of at least 3 of the 5 characteristics, including: low HDL (high-density lipoprotein), elevated triglycerides, elevated blood pressure, elevated blood glucose (hyperglycemia) and abdominal obesity.

When LPS enters the bloodstream from the gastrointestinal tract, due to a variety of factors including dietary habits and changes in intestinal permeability (leaky gut), it provokes low grade inflammation, which can play a role in the development of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.
